Thinking of using Mellow Mocha in your interiors?

This warm neutral shade is just perfect for most rooms in the home. Introducing warmth, whilst acting as a neutral shade that’s complementary with so many other shades.

I personally hate using bright white in an interior because the constant repainting and touching up becomes wholly tiresome. A neutral, or a colour with a little bit more warmth is so much easier to maintain, and it can completely lift an interior without being overbearing.

In this article, we delve into Mellow Mocha by Dulux, Mellow Mocha living room ideas and what other colours go well with this dusty pink shade.

Is Mellow Mocha A Warm Colour?

Mellow Mocha is considered a warm neutral shade, it has undertones of red and orange which can make this shade appear dusty pink, but it can even look lilac and brown in certain lights This neutral looks beautiful which a range of complementary colours, from defining colours like black through to neutral pairings such as grey.

Mellow Mocha is a perfect colour for living rooms, hallways and bedrooms. It’s also a really popular shade for bathrooms, children’s bedrooms and nurseries.

Always grab a tester pot and paint a patch in the chosen room before committing as it can look different in different lights, and homes.

What Colours Go With Mellow Mocha?

Tonal Combinations

Mellow Mocha has an interesting mix of undertones, so tonally Dulux have paired it with Volcanic Red and Tuscan Terracotta.

If you are looking to create a more neutral interior, then Tuscan Terracotta will be much easier to incorporate without it looking like colours are clashing. This shade could be introduced on the walls, in decor accessories such as vases, or with home textiles such as cushions and throws.

Mellow Mocha is a warm neutral, so pairing with other warm shades works really well in an interior.

Neutral Combinations

Mellow Mocha really can look different in different lights. It can look dusty pink, lilac and even a really pale shade of brown in some lights. It’s all dependent on what colours you pair it with too as the undertones of those will help to bring the relevant colour out in Mellow Mocha.

For a neutral colour scheme, Soft Truffle, a beautiful warm neutral and Hazelnut Truffle have been suggested colours by Dulux.

In every colour scheme you do need a defining shade, so something like Hazelnut Truffle is a great alternative to black as it isn’t as oppressive.

Use this as an accent colour only, this could include being used on doors, architraves, skirting boards and on subtle decor accessories.

Designer’s Choice Combinations

Whilst it’s great to pair colours that tonally work well together, don’t let it stop you experimenting with bolder colours, especially if you want to create a statement room, or you’re trying to create a maximalist home decor scheme.

For coastal, nautical influence, pair with Marine Splash. This is such a beautiful aquamarine shade and would look great as a focal wall, in wall art or used on decor accessories.

For a more defining shade, Highland Green pairs really well with Mellow Mocha, again introduce with decor accessories such as cushions or throws to keep things light, and casual.

Mellow Mocha & Black

Every colour scheme should have a defining shade, this helps to ground the room and stops colours from looking like they’re floating, this usually happens when too many like colours have been used in an interior.

Black is a great all rounder, it’s perfect for modern decor design and it only has to be used in subtle doses to give the desired effect. Think chair leg accents, wooden knobs that are painted back and other interior hardware details.

Mellow Mocha & White

Bright white or off-whites can be a difficult choice in busy households as they show every imperfection possible, that’s not to say it should completely be ruled out of use in an interior though.

White can provide a beautiful, crisp contrast against warmer colours which can in turn help to elevate an interior, quite literally.

Adding bright white to a ceiling, or above a picture rail instantly draws the eye up as you enter the room, making the ceilings feel taller than they actually are.

Mellow Mocha & Cream

For a neutral colour scheme, perhaps you’ve already opted for a warm brown such as Soft Truffle. Another complementary colour that’s great is cream. This no nonsense shade will lift the colours and keep things feeling stylish, and casual in the space.

Cream could be used on walls if you just have one Mellow Mocha feature wall, on textiles such as rugs, curtains, cushions or throws. It’s so easy to bring this colour into the mix in an affordable way.

Mellow Mocha & Bright White Ceilings

Here is an example of Mellow Mocha being used all in across the walls, the addition of the bright white ceilings helps to elevate the room whilst it provides a beautiful, crisp and clean contrast.

If you’re opting for carpet in a living room, I personally think cream is by far one of the best neutral colours as it does go seamlessly with every colour, whilst things can be a little bit more difficult to match with a grey carpet.

Half Panelled Wall

Whilst this is a shot from a beautiful nursery, I wanted to demonstrate what could easily be achieved in a living room.

I adore a half panelled wall, and similar to the trick with painting a ceiling in a brighter colour, having one half in mellow mocha and the upper half in a cream, white, or off-white just helps to elevate the room whilst the bottom half provides a really defining aspect of the room.

This is really easy to replicate, whilst it adds so much more visual interest than a plain painted wall does.

Panelled Feature Wall

I also love a panelled feature wall like this, perfect for country, rustic and more traditional living rooms. It adds visual interest to that singular wall, and it breaks up the monotony of using a single colour on all the walls.

I love it!

There are so many other ways that Mellow Mocha can be introduced to a living room. Break up the walls with defining wall art, do a feature wall that combines a couple of complementary colours, or go all in and appreciate the beauty of this warm neutral.

  1. Hi, Ive found your articles on the Dulux paints really helpful! I have done a feature wall over the fireplace in Mellow Mocha in our dining room and the other 3 walls in Natural Wicker, do you have any advice on styling or if these two even go together please. Thanks!

    • Thanks for reading, I’m glad it was helpful! Yes – I would say that this is a perfect base for an earthy colour scheme, use a few black accents in your scheme, this will ground the room and pull the scheme together – this could be small things such as door handles, leg accents on a sofa, a vase or frames. Then for accent colours you could use a mix of earthy olive greens, terracotta shades and cream tones. I have a post on earthy living room ideas which might help! https://www.sleek-chic.co.uk/2024/02/earthy-living-room-ideas.html thanks, Nicole x
